Crystals & Stones

This zone will include healing as well as metaphysical properties of crystals, minerals, stones and rocks. More will come up as new questions and discussions occur within the zone. A really good source of basic information is a website called Crystal Vaults, much of the information included here about the basics of crystals will be from there. The information there is by no means exhaustive and to be clear form the beginning they are indeed in sales and no, I don't work for them nor do I stand to gain a thing by linking them, their info is just a useful starting point. I include this "go-to" for quick information as the tip of a  very large iceberg that is only the beginning of a long journey to learning more. Consider it a catalyst to knowledge that will hopefully lead to the wisdom that comes in the experiences birthed by that knowledge. It will start off as very basic "stuff" and expand in time. Toxic Gemstones

    Toxic Gemstones

Some gemstones contain metals or toxins. Below is a list of the better known toxic gemstones, but please be aware that this list is by no means complete.

If you wish to make an "elixir" or essence from a known toxic gemstone, or you are unsure about a particular gemstone, only use the indirect method.

*On a personal note I want to add that I hope no one takes this to extremes. It isn't as though licking a labradorite will land you in the hospital or anything. Of course I'm not suggesting one should suck on a crystal like it's a tootsie pop either, obviously. Yes, there are some toxins in some gemstones and minerals but if you use common sense you will be fine. Most have to be heated or chemically treated to release toxicity. Some become toxic when inhaled in powder form such as when one is sawing or grinding the stone. The chances of dying or even getting sick from simply touching a gemstone and in most cases even putting one in your mouth for a hot second, are too slim to mention. Yes, be cautious. Please, don't be paranoid and allow yourself to be distracted from the wonderful world of Crystals and Stones.

"huh?" - stops licking labrador ...

        :)

i'm not sure why copper is considered toxic, do you know?

I am uncertain about the science behind it. I don't think that the copper is what creates the toxicity so much as it is the combination of the mineral content apart from the copper mixing in with it. It's one of those things...I use crystals and gemstones but I don't process them in any way. I've stuck a chunk of malachite in my mouth (once years ago when I was nervous and had a malachite pendant) and felt no ill effects, I know of folks who do work with gemstones and wear a little paper mask over their mouth and nose so as not to breathe anything in. Some have been doing it for decades with no ill effects. My guess is that it isn't copper, it's copper the way it presents in the gemstone.

Does that even make a little bit of sense???

i'm not aware of any evidence that copper in crystals is toxic - but if you breathe in small particles of it then that might not be ideal. copper is actually used by the body, but as i understand it, it needs to be in an organic form which is found in plants, rather than the inorganic form that is more commonly found as a metal on earth.

without some form of scientific data presented to backup the assertion of toxicity, the assertions don't have much use or value to me.

Indeed, I'm well aware of the importance of copper with regard to health. As an herbalist, massage therapist etc, I have studied the human body at length. As to evidence, if you want it, go ahead and find it, it's there. Maybe begin with metal-catalyzed protein oxidation and metabolism.

As I indicated before, I'm not terribly  interested in that part of it as I don't process gemstones and crystals and in the decades I have used them I haven't had issue. I included the information because I want my zone to be as informative as possible, that means including information. Some information I post will be more inclusive, mainly, things I have taken more interest in will have more information. Anything else will have just enough to get a person who IS interested enough to dig in. There are loads of sources, plenty of evidence that indicates toxicity should one be interested enough to look it up, I don't just make stuff up and post it, lol.

I hear you though, I'm the same way, obviously. Sometimes information is, as you say, "not much use or value to me" and for me, if that is the case I do minimal research to know just what I feel I need to know. For me, "minimal" is more than most, lol. (Was a librarian, old habits.) I'm not the type to dismiss something out of hand, if I have the desire I'll research the shit out of something.

At any rate, if this one post out of the MANY I have posted with relation to crystals and gemstones doesn't appeal to you there are others you could read. It is interesting that the one that is "not much use or value" has gotten the most attention.    ;)

I'm not saying that the topic isn't interesting or that your comments are wrong - I'm just saying that when it comes to changing my patterns in life with regards chemistry and objects that contain the chemicals, I generally do that only based on evidence that I need to do it.

Oh no, it's fine. I mean, clearly you're at least a little bit interested or you wouldn't have read it in the first place. As to my comments being wrong, well to say that would be erroneous. No one is asking you to change any patterns in your life, me? I like upheaval...I like change...not the biggest fan of patterns, especially ones I get stuck in like a snake in a wagon rut. Limits my growth to not be open to new things. That's me though, I'm like a friendly golden retriever just boppin' along getting into everything, at least the stuff that I like the smell of, lol.

As I said before, the evidence is out there should you be interested in finding it. It's like you yourself said, only if you feel you "need" to do it, well, do you? If not, we're in the same boat, as I mentioned, my interest isn't in crystal toxicity, it's in crystal use, so I felt no need to do further research on it. My brain is like my hard drive and it only makes sense to put things in there that I find useful. Loads of folks fill their heads with all kinds of rubbish making it harder to get to the stuff that matters, at least that's how it would be for me, I'd never presume to speak for others. At any rate, I put enough information to get anyone who IS interested started.
