Crystals & Stones

This zone will include healing as well as metaphysical properties of crystals, minerals, stones and rocks. More will come up as new questions and discussions occur within the zone.\r\nA really good source of basic information is a website called Crystal Vaults, much of the information included here about the basics of crystals will be from there. The information there is by no means exhaustive and to be clear form the beginning they are indeed in sales and no, I don't work for them nor do I stand to gain a thing by linking them, their info is just a useful starting point. I include this "go-to" for quick information as the tip of a  very large iceberg that is only the beginning of a long journey to learning more. Consider it a catalyst to knowledge that will hopefully lead to the wisdom that comes in the experiences birthed by that knowledge. It will start off as very basic "stuff" and expand in time. Oh no, it's fine. I mean, clearly you're at least a little bit interested or you wouldn't have read it in the first place. As to my comments being wrong, well to say that would be erroneous. No one is asking you to change any patterns in your life, me? I like upheaval...I like change...not the biggest fan of patterns, especially ones I get stuck in like a snake in a wagon rut. Limits my growth to not be open to new things. That's me though, I'm like a friendly golden retriever just boppin' along getting into everything, at least the stuff that I like the smell of, lol.

        \r\n

As I said before, the evidence is out there should you be interested in finding it. It's like you yourself said, only if you feel you "need" to do it, well, do you? If not, we're in the same boat, as I mentioned, my interest isn't in crystal toxicity, it's in crystal use, so I felt no need to do further research on it. My brain is like my hard drive and it only makes sense to put things in there that I find useful. Loads of folks fill their heads with all kinds of rubbish making it harder to get to the stuff that matters, at least that's how it would be for me, I'd never presume to speak for others. At any rate, I put enough information to get anyone who IS interested started.

Indeed, I'm well aware of the importance of copper with regard to health. As an herbalist, massage therapist etc, I have studied the human body at length. As to evidence, if you want it, go ahead and find it, it's there. Maybe begin with metal-catalyzed protein oxidation and metabolism.

            \r\n

As I indicated before, I'm not terribly  interested in that part of it as I don't process gemstones and crystals and in the decades I have used them I haven't had issue. I included the information because I want my zone to be as informative as possible, that means including information. Some information I post will be more inclusive, mainly, things I have taken more interest in will have more information. Anything else will have just enough to get a person who IS interested enough to dig in. There are loads of sources, plenty of evidence that indicates toxicity should one be interested enough to look it up, I don't just make stuff up and post it, lol.

            \r\n

I hear you though, I'm the same way, obviously. Sometimes information is, as you say, "not much use or value to me" and for me, if that is the case I do minimal research to know just what I feel I need to know. For me, "minimal" is more than most, lol. (Was a librarian, old habits.) I'm not the type to dismiss something out of hand, if I have the desire I'll research the shit out of something.

            \r\n

At any rate, if this one post out of the MANY I have posted with relation to crystals and gemstones doesn't appeal to you there are others you could read. It is interesting that the one that is "not much use or value" has gotten the most attention.    ;)

i'm not aware of any evidence that copper in crystals is toxic - but if you breathe in small particles of it then that might not be ideal. copper is actually used by the body, but as i understand it, it needs to be in an organic form which is found in plants, rather than the inorganic form that is more commonly found as a metal on earth.

              \r\n

without some form of scientific data presented to backup the assertion of toxicity, the assertions don't have much use or value to me.

SoulFish commented on the thought: 'Toxic Gemstones'

I am uncertain about the science behind it. I don't think that the copper is what creates the toxicity so much as it is the combination of the mineral content apart from the copper mixing in with it. It's one of those things...I use crystals and gemstones but I don't process them in any way. I've stuck a chunk of malachite in my mouth (once years ago when I was nervous and had a malachite pendant) and felt no ill effects, I know of folks who do work with gemstones and wear a little paper mask over their mouth and nose so as not to breathe anything in. Some have been doing it for decades with no ill effects. My guess is that it isn't copper, it's copper the way it presents in the gemstone.

                \r\n

Does that even make a little bit of sense???

SoulFish published a new thought: 'MALACHITE'

                  MALACHITE

Malachite is a stone of transformation and emotional clarity. It teaches one to take responsibility for one's own actions, thoughts and emotions and helps release inhibitions while encouraging expression of one's own true feelings. It also allows empathy toward others. Instinct and intuition are boosted by malachite and it opens the door for advancement spiritually. It helps clarify emotions and releases negative life experiences. Malachite works to release the past not by simply "letting it go" before you might be ready to, meaning those feelings might return. Instead, it transforms them via perspective into positive, in other words it doesn't change the incident bit rather it changes our own perception of those events. It also brings clarity by helping one connect to the powers that be without fear.

                  \r\n

Malachite also helps with concentration and aids with physical, psychic and intuitive vision. It's said to help balance the desires of ego against the higher will. Emotional blockages are diminished and new ideas and creativity are inspired. Once goals are clearly set, malachite helps make them manifest. It's soothing to the soul and builds strength in all three main areas of life, the physical, mental and spiritual. It is said that malachite can also assist one in counteracting and overcoming self-destructive romantic tendencies and wearing it near the heart is said to expand one's ability to love.

                  \r\n

The high copper content gives it a steady, pulsing electromagnetic field which absorbs negativity from the aura and cleanses it. It enhances emotional stability and general balance. Malachite defends against toxins physically, mentally and spiritually while at the same time, the high copper content makes it a little bit toxic itself. In its raw state, especially when it's being worked with, such as ground into powder or sawed, the powder is toxic to inhale. It is often sealed with a coating after polished.

                  \r\n

Malachite strengthens the entire body from skin to organs when the energy is directed properly. It is said to detoxify the liver, stimulate the brain, relieve menstrual cramps as well as pain from other ailments such as arthritis or stiff joints. It strengthens the immune system and has been said to help shrink tumors that are a result of toxins as well as aiding with afflictions of the 4th chakra.

                  \r\n

Malachite is helpful with heart pains or irregularities but shouldn't be worn for too long by people who have tachycardia as it can increase heart rate. It has been said to combat dyslexia and help with focus. Malachite brings focus by strengthening one's ability to absorb and process information, this inevitably creates a better understanding of things and allows us to see more than we would have otherwise seen. It helps with childbirth and is a good stone for midwives to carry as it is a great tool for whatever they do related to their job. It also lowers blood pressure, helps with arthritis, epilepsy, joint pain, growths and travel sickness.

                  \r\n

                  \r\n

It was once thought that malachite could warn against impending danger. It was believed that it would break apart into pieces to warn the person carrying it that danger was nearby. Sleeping with it under your pillow or nearby assists with remembering the dreamtime. Even if you cannot fully understand what a dream means the memory of it will be retained so that when you are ready you will fully recall the information you need. It is also good for elderly people as it helps with remembering things otherwise thought long forgotten.

                  \r\n

Malachite lends extra energy and power to any working or rite. It is used in protective magic, specifically where children are concerned and can be worn or carried to guard against negativity as well as physical dangers. Malachite is effective on all chakras most notably with the heart chakra in terms of love and opening the heart not just to romantic types of love but also unconditional types of love such as with family. It has been used for scrying, the bends and turns in the patterns like walking a labyrinth to insight.

                  \r\n

Since malachite absorbs negative energy it must be cleansed frequently. Malachite can be cleansed and recharged by placing it on a quartz crystal cluster or in a geode. Some recommend putting it in the sun  while others bury it for a time in the earth and then rinse it in moving water such as a stream or river. One shouldn't cleanse it in the ocean or use salt with it at all as salt can cause damage to the stone. Be careful when wearing it as it amplifies any energy you send out. One negative thought can have an amplified effect and the returned negative energy can come back threefold to you.

                  \r\n

Associated with Capricorn, Scorpio and Libra as well as with the element of water as it is a transformative stone and works to cleanse the psyche of past things that are preventing forward movement on one's journey. Placed on the third eye it will activate visualization and psychic vision. Placed on the heart chakra it helps open one to love whether it's romantic love, familial love or universal love and even love of self.

                      Toxic Gemstones

                      Toxic Gemstones

                      \r\n

Some gemstones contain metals or toxins. Below is a list of the better known toxic gemstones, but please be aware that this list is by no means complete.

                      \r\n

If you wish to make an "elixir" or essence from a known toxic gemstone, or you are unsure about a particular gemstone, only use the indirect method.

                      \r\n

*On a personal note I want to add that I hope no one takes this to extremes. It isn't as though licking a labradorite will land you in the hospital or anything. Of course I'm not suggesting one should suck on a crystal like it's a tootsie pop either, obviously. Yes, there are some toxins in some gemstones and minerals but if you use common sense you will be fine. Most have to be heated or chemically treated to release toxicity. Some become toxic when inhaled in powder form such as when one is sawing or grinding the stone. The chances of dying or even getting sick from simply touching a gemstone and in most cases even putting one in your mouth for a hot second, are too slim to mention. Yes, be cautious. Please, don't be paranoid and allow yourself to be distracted from the wonderful world of Crystals and Stones.

SoulFish added a new discussion topic Crystals: Quick Reference Guide

There is a tool at the Crystal Vaults site that I have found to be generally useful. It's a reference guide with a quick look into a few points of information about varied crystals based on what one might use them for. An example of an entry looks like this:\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nCrystals for Motivation\r\n\r\nMotivation isn’t always an easy attribute to find. It doesn’t come to all of us easily, and the ones it does it can be just as easily lost. It seems as if are motivation can sometimes be directly related to our emotions and situation. If we are in a bad place either emotionally or in our lives, motivation can seem like a far off dream. We need motivation in our lives to become more, move on, move up, and find better places for us to be, both mentally and spiritually. If you are looking to find or increase your motivation we recommend light olive colored crystals such as Prehnite and Pyromorphite.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nHopefully people will find it useful. HERE is the link.

                                  CRYSTAL-MINERAL-ROCK-STONE

In case you aren't interested  in the details but you are interested in a quick question that clears up whether you are getting a legitimate crystal simply ask if it is a variety of mineral and if so, what variety? If it isn't a variety of mineral, it's a rock.  If you want to verify, the best place to do so is: https://www.mindat.org/, the world's largest public database of mineral information.

                                  \r\n

The crystal market is loaded with stones and crystals that aren't verified on any "established" list, examples of these are boji stones, lemurian crystals, Columbian amber and azeztulite. Common minerals and rocks are often given trade names, like a brand name. If you see a TM next to the name of a crystal that is what it is, not a unique mineral variety.

                                  \r\n

                                  As to the differences:

                                  \r\n

CRYSTALS: Natural or manmade they are either transparent or have "external planar faces" or flat sides, like pyrite. Most don't have names, they are called by their mineral variety name such as 'amethyst crystal' or 'quartz crystal.' There is no 'established' list of crystal names.

                                  \r\n

MINERALS: The word mineral refers to a non-organic substance naturally occurring in nature as a solid. A mineral has a definitive chemical composition and an orderly crystalline structure of molecules, examples are iron, quartz and carbon. For the sake of clarity here are some things that are not minerals; Pearl comes from an organic source, an oyster and amber originated in a tree so they are not minerals. Oxygen is not found in nature as a solid-not a mineral. Glass has no crystalline structure and granite is a mixture of minerals such as quartz, feldspar and mica, which makes it a rock. There is an 'established' list of minerals and their common varieties, they all have formal, universally accepted names via the International Mineralogical Society.

                                  \r\n

ROCKS: A rock is an aggregate of one or more minerals and maybe some organic compounds. There is no "approved" list of rock names and new ones seem to pop up all the time.

                                  \r\n

STONES: The word stone is a slang word that refers to a rock or mineral that is not a crystal, like alabaster.

                                  \r\n

                                      that's great - thanks :)
i have 'the crystal bible' here and as i recall it describes kunzite as being useful in soul retrieval - which is along the lines of what you are saying here. my own experience was of tuning in to a piece of pink kunzite on the street in central london. i set the intention of matching my own frequency to the frequency of the kunzite and unexpectedly after about a minute, my heart and whole chest became warm and alivened - i presume i unblocked a deep issue in my heart. it was amazing and now i have a piece around my neck most of the time.
